These decks were attached to two houses that were built about six years earlier. They were designed and built by the same architect and as such were both in need of their third staining. Most decks need stained every year in Portland if you want to keep them looking nice, as the amount of rain we get wears stains out quickly. We also repainted the railings, re-stained one front door, and stripped and re-stained a garden bench. The end result was several decks that looked good as new!

Here is a basic ground level deck built with a high end composite decking. This decking material is made by Timbertech, it is part of their Earthwood series and it is in the color of Teak. It is one of our all time favorites because of its appearance, it is in our opinion one of the most realistic looking of any composites. The decking has a natural wood texture on top and dark color streaks that imitate the look of natural exotic hardwoods. It also has grooves in the sides of the boards so that hidden fasteners can be used. This results in a very high end appearance as no screws can be seen in the face of the decking. As an added touch this customer could have had the deck frame wrapped in fascia to cover up the pressure treated frame. We recommend this in general with composite decks but this customer wanted the cost savings of not installing it. Either way though, this is a very beautiful deck!

This customer had an old cedar deck that had holes in the decking because of rot. They were lucky however that the framing was pressure treated because we were able to reuse it. So we removed the old decking and replaced it with new cedar decking. In order to save money we also re-used the railing as it had been maintained well and was still structurally sound. We rebuilt the stairs completely and built a new flower box as well. We stained the project with Benjamin Moore’s Arbor coat stain in the color of Saddle leather brown. This is a two coat stain with a clear coat as the second coat. The advantage of this is that the customer can easily just add a clear coat each year to maintain the stain for years to come. It is also a low VOC stain which means it is much better for the environment. The result was impressive!

This style of fencing really adds a classy look to any property. Instead of traditional vertical fence boards, we use longer lengths and run them horizontally. The boards also alternate in width to accentuate this Japanese inspired design. We top the fence with a 2×6 cedar board which finishes it off and protects the fence boards from the rain. Overall this is a beautiful fence any way you look at it.

This homeowner had replaced the parts of his deck that rotted bit by bit over the years. It was a two story deck and he never wanted to shell out the money necessary to replace the whole thing at once. So as a result all the easily accessible parts had been replaced with pressure treated wood, but the beams underneath the entire bottom deck were old and rotten. After a house inspection was done so the house could be sold, it was required that the beams under the deck be replaced. We removed the decking, braced the upper deck, and replaced all the beams. By the time we were done there wasn’t a single bit of non pressure treated wood on the deck.

We built this privacy screen along with a new fence to help block the view of the neighbor. Unfortunately the old adage, “A good fence makes a good neighbor” is sometimes the only way to make the peace. There had been some arguing with this neighbor, so this customer had us build a new higher fence and this solid metal privacy screen to help block out the chance of having to see him again and to add privacy.

Here is a newer Northeast Portland house that originally had an aggregate back patio. The customer didn’t like the original basic patio so we built a nice cedar one over the top and extended the size of it. We went with a six foot wide section of steps, cedar fascia, and a “picture frame” on one end. The result was a much nicer place for socializing.

This rental house was foreclosed on by the bank and purchased by a person who was remodeling it to turn it back into a rental unit. There were various problems of concern and various contractors addressing them, but we just focused on the rotten deck. Our initial recommendation was to replace the whole thing, but the customer really wanted to do it as cheaply as possible. So we just replaced the rotten joists and beams, replaced the plywood decking, and applied a new waterproof membrane. It is a non slip waterproof surface with a 50 year warrantee that keeps the lower area dry. The railing was to be stripped and painted by the customer at a later date.
