Deck Resurfacing with Trex Select 2×6 Decking

West Linn – This project was a great example of how a deck resurfacing can be the right solution when the existing frame is still in solid condition. The homeowner felt the deck structure was reusable, so Deck Masters came out to carefully inspect the frame and determine whether resurfacing made sense.  Because the home was built in the early 2000s, the existing deck frame was pressure-treated and already had flashing in place. After reviewing the structure, we agreed that resurfacing was a practical option. Rather than tearing everything out and rebuilding from scratch, we were able to preserve the usable framing, make targeted repairs, and upgrade the deck with new Trex composite decking and Trex composite railings.

Solving 24-Inch Joist Spacing with Trex 2×6 Decking

One important detail on this project was the existing joist spacing. The frame was built with 24-inch joist spacing, while standard 1×6 composite decking typically requires tighter spacing. Instead of adding a large amount of extra framing and driving up the cost, the homeowner chose Trex Select 2×6 Pebble Grey decking. Joist tape provides an added layer of protection on top of the framing members before the new deck boards are installed, helping reduce moisture exposure in one of the most vulnerable areas of the deck structure.

To complete the project, we installed Trex Select composite railing with a Trex Select cocktail rail. The white railing posts and rails with black balusters create a clean, timeless look, while the cocktail rail adds a functional flat top surface that works well for entertaining. This railing style gives the deck a finished appearance while keeping views into the yard open. The cocktail rail also ties nicely into the overall deck design and adds a practical detail for everyday use.
