NW Portland – This custom Trex deck was designed and built in a truly unique setting — tucked into the woods beside the customer’s home and surrounded by towering Douglas fir trees. With heavy tree coverage around the property, the homeowners wanted to create a separate outdoor living space up on the hill where they could catch more sunlight, enjoy the forest views, and have a peaceful place to relax or entertain.  The finished result is a beautiful elevated deck that feels like it belongs in the landscape. Rather than competing with the natural surroundings, the warm decking tones, black railing posts, stainless steel cable, and clean horizontal lines allow the structure to blend seamlessly into the surrounding forest.

Trex Lineage Hatteras Decking

For the decking surface, we installed heat tolerant Trex Lineage Hatteras decking. The soft, natural color works especially well in this wooded setting, creating a warm and understated look that complements the trees, landscaping, and surrounding hillside.  Trex Lineage is a great option for homeowners who want the beauty of a wood-inspired deck without the regular maintenance of traditional wood decking. For a deck surrounded by trees and exposed to Pacific Northwest weather, low-maintenance composite decking is a practical choice that helps keep the space looking clean and inviting year after year.

Stainless Steel Cable Railing for Open Forest Views

To preserve the view into the woods, we installed American Structures and Design stainless steel cable railing. Cable railing is an excellent choice for scenic decks because it provides safety and structure without blocking the surrounding view.  The black posts create a clean modern frame around the deck, while the stainless steel cable keeps the railing visually light and open. This allows the homeowners to enjoy the feeling of being surrounded by the forest from nearly every angle.

42-Inch Cocktail Rail with Trex Top Cap

One of the best details on this project is the 42-inch-tall cable railing with a Trex Lineage Hatteras top cap. This height creates a comfortable bar-style or cocktail rail, perfect for entertaining, setting down a drink, or simply leaning against while taking in the view.  Using the same Trex Lineage Hatteras material for the top cap ties the railing system back into the deck surface and gives the entire project a more finished, custom look.

A Forest Deck Designed for Sun, Views, and Entertaining

This project is a great example of how a deck does not always need to be attached directly to the main living space to become one of the best areas on the property. By building the deck up on the hill, the homeowners gained a destination outdoor space where they can enjoy more sunlight, better views, and a quiet connection to the natural landscape.  From the composite decking to the cable railing and cocktail rail detail, every part of this custom deck was selected to enhance the setting while keeping the focus on the surrounding trees.
