Ipe Deck Resurfacing with Westbury Riviera Railing

SW Portland – This deck resurfacing project gave the homeowners a beautiful, high-end outdoor living space using one of the most durable decking materials available: Ipe Brazilian hardwood. Rather than fully rebuilding the deck from the ground up, we were able to inspect the existing frame, make the necessary repairs, and resurface the deck with new premium hardwood decking and a custom Westbury railing system. The finished result is a warm, rich, and timeless deck that feels much more refined than a standard resurfacing project. Because this deck is visible from the front of the home, the homeowners wanted materials and details that would stand out while still complementing the property’s landscaping and architecture.

Ipe Brazilian Hardwood Decking

For the decking surface, we installed Ipe Brazilian hardwood, pre-stained with Messmer’s UV Plus Natural Hardwood stain formula. Ipe is known for its rich natural color, dense grain, and excellent durability, making it a great choice for homeowners who want a luxury hardwood deck with long-term performance. The natural hardwood tone pairs beautifully with the surrounding trees, garden views, and home exterior. The result is a deck that feels warm and elegant while still being built to handle everyday outdoor use.

Westbury Riviera Aluminum Railing

To complete the deck, we installed a new Westbury Riviera aluminum railing system. This railing was selected because the homeowners wanted something more distinctive that included a mid-rail and stood out more than a standard picket railing, especially with the deck being visible from the front of the home.  The Westbury Riviera design gives the railing a more custom look while still providing the durability and low maintenance benefits of aluminum. The black railing frames the deck beautifully and creates a clean contrast against the rich Ipe decking.

4×4 Aluminum Posts with Ipe Top Cap

One of the standout details on this project is the use of 4×4 aluminum posts paired with a 5/4×6 Ipe top cap. The Ipe top cap ties the railing directly into the new deck surface and creates a functional cocktail rail that works well for entertaining, relaxing, or setting down a drink while enjoying the view. This detail gives the railing a more finished, custom-built appearance and helps the entire project feel cohesive. Instead of the railing looking like a separate system, the Ipe top cap connects it visually to the hardwood decking.

Frame Repairs and Joist Tape

As with any deck resurfacing or “re-skin” project, we carefully reviewed the existing frame before installing new materials. Any rotten framing members or components that did not meet our standard were repaired or replaced to create a stronger and cleaner surface for the new decking. We also added joist tape to help increase the life of the frame and provide additional rot protection. This is an important step in a resurfacing project because it helps protect the framing beneath the new deck boards from moisture exposure.
