Commercial Cedar Deck Resurfacing at River Place Hotel

Downtown Portland – This commercial deck resurfacing project was completed for River Place Hotel in downtown Portland, located along the waterfront. The hotel’s existing cedar deck had become old, weathered, and rotting, which made it more difficult for the property to confidently use the space for events, weddings, guest gatherings, and outdoor seating.  After inspecting the deck, we found that the underlying frame was still in good shape. Rather than replacing the entire structure, we were able to make the required repairs, protect the existing frame, and resurface the deck with beautiful new cedar decking.

Commercial Deck Resurfacing for a Hotel and Event Space

For hotels, restaurants, event venues, and other commercial properties, outdoor spaces need to be attractive, safe, and functional. We resurfaced the deck using natural tight knot cedar decking, pre-stained in Messmer’s UV Plus Colorado Brown stain. This warm cedar tone fits beautifully with the waterfront setting and helps the deck blend into the green landscape behind the hotel. Cedar was a great fit for this project because it provides a natural, classic look that works well for hospitality spaces. The new surface gives the hotel a more inviting outdoor area for guests, events, and weddings while maintaining a warm Pacific Northwest feel.

Frame Repairs and Joist Tape Protection

As with any resurfacing project, the frame inspection and preparation were just as important as the new decking. We made the required repairs to any areas that needed attention before installing the new cedar boards. We also added joist tape to help protect the existing frame from moisture exposure and extend the life of the structure. This is especially important on commercial properties, where the deck needs to hold up to regular use, weather exposure, and ongoing guest traffic.

Ramp Repairs for Wheelchair and Guest Access

In addition to resurfacing the main deck, we also made repairs to the ramp area to help maintain wheelchair access and improve ease of movement through the space. For a hotel and event venue, accessibility matters. The updated ramp helps make the outdoor area more functional for guests, staff, event vendors, and visitors moving between the patio, deck, and surrounding waterfront areas.
