SW Portland – This custom cedar deck rebuild combines natural wood character, thoughtful design details, durable modern railings, and a beautiful outdoor kitchen enclosure. The deck also backs up to a peaceful creek ravine setting, so preserving the natural view and creating a deck that blended into the surrounding landscape were important parts of the design. We rebuilt the deck using pre-stained tight knot cedar decking finished in Messmer’s UV Plus Driftwood Grey stain. The result is a natural wood deck with a soft weathered tone that blends beautifully with the trees, landscaping, and wooded creekside backdrop.
Pre-Stained Tight Knot Cedar Decking
For homeowners who love the look and feel of real wood, tight knot cedar is a classic economical choice. On this project, the cedar decking was pre-stained with Messmer’s UV Plus Driftwood Grey, giving the deck a more refined, natural appearance without losing the character of the cedar grain. It is a great fit for a Pacific Northwest backyard where the goal is to blend the deck into the surrounding landscape rather than make it feel overly modern or artificial.
2×12 Tight Knot Cedar Fascia for a Durable Finished Edge
One of the standout construction details on this deck is the use of a thicker 2×12 tight knot cedar fascia. We used the fascia to cap the ends of the decking, creating a more durable border and a clean finished edge around the deck. This detail helps give the deck a more substantial, custom-built look. Instead of exposed board ends or a basic trim detail, the larger fascia creates a strong visual frame around the deck and helps protect the perimeter.
Bronze Aluminum Cable Railing with Stainless Steel Cables
To preserve the open view into the surrounding landscape, we installed a durable and sleek American Structures and Design aluminum cable railing system in bronze with stainless steel cables. The bronze railing finish pairs beautifully with the natural cedar decking and wooded setting, while the stainless steel cable infill keeps the railing visually open. This gives the deck the safety and structure it needs without blocking the view into the trees and backyard.
Custom Cedar Privacy Screen and Pergola
A major feature of this project is the custom cedar privacy screen and pergola built to enclose the homeowner’s outdoor kitchen area. This creates a dedicated space for cooking and entertaining while adding privacy and architectural interest to the deck. The cedar pergola structure ties naturally into the deck materials, while the privacy screen adds function without making the space feel closed in. It gives the outdoor kitchen a more intentional feel, almost like an outdoor room built directly into the deck design. To complete the privacy screen, we used aluminum Hideaway panels. These panels add a clean, modern contrast to the cedar framing while providing the privacy the homeowners wanted around their outdoor kitchen.
A Natural Wood Deck Built for Outdoor Living
This project is a great example of how cedar can be used to create a custom outdoor living space with warmth, structure, and personality. From the pre-stained tight knot cedar decking to the thicker fascia detail, bronze aluminum cable railing, and custom privacy screen, every part of the deck was designed to feel finished and intentional. With the added pergola and Hideaway privacy panels, the homeowners now have a more private outdoor kitchen area that feels connected to the rest of the deck and surrounding yard. The combination of natural cedar, bronze aluminum cable railing, stainless steel cables, and aluminum privacy panels creates a balanced look: warm and organic, but still crisp and contemporary.
