- Stepped down Hog Panel fence
SW Portland – This project started after we completed structural repairs to the customer’s existing deck. Once the deck was shored up and brought back to a stronger standard, the homeowners also wanted a way to enclose a large portion of their property for their pets and young children. The challenge was the landscape. This property had a rough, natural terrain with hills, trees, boulders, uneven grade changes, and dense greenery throughout the yard. Rather than forcing a standard fence layout into a difficult space, we worked with the existing landscape to create a custom hog panel fence that followed the property naturally while still providing the containment the homeowners needed.
Custom Hog Panel Fence for Pets and Children
The main goal of this fence was function. The homeowners needed a durable enclosure that would help keep pets and young children safely contained within a usable portion of the property. A hog panel fence was a great choice for this setting because it provides a strong physical barrier while still keeping the space visually open. Instead of closing off the yard with a solid privacy fence, the hog panel design allows the homeowners to maintain the view of the surrounding trees, plants, and natural landscape.
Built Around Hills, Trees, and Boulders
This was not a simple flat-yard fence installation. The fence had to be built around existing trees, grade changes, rock features, garden areas, and uneven terrain. We laid out the fence to enclose a large enough section of the property to be functional while still respecting the natural shape of the yard. The stepped sections help the fence transition through the sloped landscape without looking forced or out of place. The finished result feels like it belongs in the setting — practical, sturdy, and still connected to the wooded surroundings.
Pressure-Treated Posts and Rails
For the fence frame, we used pressure-treated posts and rails to create a more durable and rot-resistant perimeter. In the Pacific Northwest, outdoor structures are constantly exposed to moisture, shade, soil contact, and seasonal weather changes, so material selection matters. The pressure-treated framing provides strength and durability, while the hog panel infill keeps the design open and lightweight. This combination works especially well for wooded properties where homeowners want function without losing the natural feel of the yard.
Gates for Easy Access
We also included gates in the fence layout so the homeowners could easily move through the property while still keeping the enclosed area secure. The gates were built to match the hog panel fence design, creating a consistent look throughout the project. For a large property with multiple outdoor zones, thoughtful gate placement is important. It allows the fence to provide containment without making the yard feel cut off or difficult to use.
A Functional Fence That Preserves the View
This project is a great example of how a custom fence can solve a practical problem without taking away from the beauty of the property. The homeowners gained a safer, enclosed outdoor space for pets and children, while the hog panel design preserved the view of the surrounding greenery. With pressure-treated posts and rails, custom gate sections, and a layout adapted to the natural landscape, this fence provides durability, function, and a clean rustic look that fits the wooded setting.
