So this project needs some explanation because obviously the fencing is very “rustic.” The posts, rails, and fence boards are all juniper on this project. The customer is very progressive and is making her home as sustainable as possible. She actually does home tours to help educated the public about sustainability and has a job working on sustainability in the region as well. So she decided to pay the extra money to go with juniper on this project because currently juniper is considered invasive in Eastern Oregon and there are programs there to remove it. So we have all this juniper that needs to be used up and the great thing about it is that it is very rot resistant just like cedar. According to Oregon University research, the posts will last 40 years in the soil, which is even better than pressure treated wood. The grade seen here is actually #1 grade but we gave the neighbor the more attractive side of each board per the customer’s request. She is going to have plants planted in front of it anyway and she likes the rustic look of it. All the dimensions of Juniper are true, so a 4×4 is actually 4″ by 4″ and the fence boards are a true 1″ thick as well. Juniper just doesn’t grow very big in the wild so it is hard to get any clear lumber from it, it has many knots and imperfections and you can’t get very long lengths of it. But it will last a very long time and it is a very sustainable product to use.
