Lake Oswego – This deck project was designed to create a more functional and private outdoor living and dining space while improving the flow between the home, deck, and existing paver patio. One of the key features of the project is a newly enclosed area for an outdoor kitchen, giving the homeowners a dedicated space for grilling, cooking, and entertaining.  To define the outdoor kitchen area, we installed a Deckorators Privacy Screen. The screen creates separation and privacy without making the deck feel closed off, while also adding a clean architectural detail to the space. It is a great solution for homeowners who want to keep outdoor cooking areas more organized, protected, and visually refined.

Trex Select Malted Barley Decking

For the decking surface, we installed heat tolerant Trex Select Malted Barley decking.  This soft, neutral composite decking color works beautifully with the home’s light exterior and the surrounding patio hardscape. The result is a clean, bright deck surface that feels open and connected to the backyard.  Trex Select is a low-maintenance composite decking option designed to provide long-term durability without the regular staining, sanding, or sealing required by traditional wood decking. For a Pacific Northwest backyard, it is a practical choice that keeps the space easier to maintain through changing seasons.

Outdoor Kitchen Area with Deckorators Privacy Screen

The new enclosed section gives the homeowners a more intentional outdoor kitchen space. By using a Deckorators Privacy Screen, we were able to create a defined area for the grill while helping shield the space from surrounding views. This type of privacy screen is especially useful for decks with cooking zones, hot tubs, seating areas, or neighboring sightlines. It adds both function and style, helping the deck feel more like a finished outdoor room.

Smooth Transition to the Existing Paver Patio

Another important part of this project was making the deck flow smoothly into the existing paver patio. Rather than feeling like two separate spaces, the new deck and patio now work together as one connected outdoor living area.  The low, open deck layout creates an easy transition from the house to the backyard, making the space more practical for entertaining, everyday use, and moving between the deck and patio.

Reoriented Stairs for Better Side-Yard Access

We also improved the transition into the side area of the house by reorienting the stairs. This small design change made a big difference in how the space functions. The new stair orientation creates a more natural path of travel and helps the deck connect better with the surrounding layout of the home and yard. Good deck design is not just about the surface material — it is also about how people move through the space. In this case, adjusting the stairs helped make the entire backyard feel more usable and intentional.

A More Functional Outdoor Living Space

This project is a great example of how a deck replacement can improve both the look and function of a backyard. With Trex Select Malted Barley decking, a Deckorators Privacy Screen, a dedicated outdoor kitchen area, improved stair flow, and a clean connection to the existing paver patio, the homeowners now have a more comfortable and usable outdoor space. Deck Masters builds custom composite decks, privacy screen systems, outdoor kitchen deck layouts, stair improvements, and patio-connected deck designs throughout the Portland metro area and Southwest Washington.
